Saint Sebastian Christian Art | Male Figure Original Small Painting
Saint Sebastian Christian Art | Male Figure Original Small Painting
This is a small-size mixed technique painting, tempera and composition (imitation) gold leaf on wooden panel.
Depicted is a Christian saint and and a gay iconic figure Saint Sebastian. – The martyr is usually depicted nude, muscular, young, attractive which is why he became a symbol of male beauty for gay community.
The Sgraffito (from Italian "sgraffiare" – to scratch) technique implemented to create this artwork was widely used during the Renaissance time in Florence, Italy. In traditional Italian gilding, the paint of egg tempera is applied onto gold leaf, then the drawing (design, pattern) is etched through the paint to reveal the golden background.
The ornaments on both sides from the male figure represent elegant peacock feathers that have long been considered a symbol of gay love between men.
The color of the tempera paint is dark green, the ornaments – golden yellow, the sides of the panel – red, the back side of the panel – plain.
The iconography symbol of Saint Sebastian – an arrow in his side – is the central accent of the painting.
Sebastian was an early Christian and martyr. He is is usually depicted tied to a tree and shot with arrows (although arrows did not kill him initially). Sebastian is a very popular nude male saint, especially among gay men but also athletes. He is a patron saint of athletes and the gay community.
