Silhouette of Introspection – A Story Behind the Male Figure Drawing

Each model has his or her motive for posing nude for an artist.

We met at the book club. Yes, I joined the book club for artists. Mostly for the reason to meet and  socialize with other artists. There I met my model. He is young, handsome and in between jobs. He joined our weekly meetings in January just to, as he puts it, find his inner creative self. As it turned out, he was eager to pose nude and he had his motives for doing this.

As I mentioned, he was in between jobs, in between relationships, questioning and hoping to figure out himself.

And although there was a thick halo of uncertainty around him, he was still very light. Masculine and elegant. So, I asked him if he would like to pose for me. Yes, he would.

I always offer my models a separate room for undressing and getting ready for posing. You know, it's not what many people think about artist-model relationship. It's work. A professional setting. It's not about eroticism and objectification. I always respect my models and appreciate when they keep it professional. Most of them do. With some exceptions... like this model.

In contrary to my other models, professional or amateur, for this handsome man it was not about posing nude but rather about the process of undressing. Well... To be honest, first it felt strange but then I thought I already started drawing so I just go with his flow.

He did it very slow, with long pauses between the moves. These pauses were long enough for me to sketch him.

The challenge for me, as an artist, and also my goal was to capture his elegant masculinity (he was moving). As for him, apparently his ultimate goal was to find out what's hiding in the alleys of his mind.

Among his many questions to which he had no answers yet, there was one thing he knew for sure. - He loves to undress. For somebody. And he did it well. There was not a moment when his body was nude. He always kept something on. Keeping some secret things secret. Suggesting. Outlining. Provoking.

The window frame came later on paper into the composition. As a symbol for his search. Backlighting his silhouette. A silhouette of introspection. Yes, the drawing itself became a kind of search for an answer to what's next?
