Florence, Italy – Museo del Novecento – Exhibition "Beauty & Desire" of Robert Mapplethorpe
I was shocked when I saw the first photographs of Mapplethorpe's exhibition in Museo del Novecento in Florence, Italy. But then I looked closer... and closer... Now I think it's an absolute Must See, and first of all a Must See for those prude critics of frontal nudity in art (among which are many of artists and even my co-students at the art school!). And here is why ::>>
- These exhibited photographs allow us to question the role of Christian iconography as a source of inspiration for artists
- The contemporary art is a re-reading of the figurative tradition of Western Europe
- Christian symbols, poses of saints and apostles will come to mind in new capacities
- The frontal nudity of human bodies lets us question the false moralism of the society (and often of the Church)
- The double life of all humans and all objects is also shown very clearly
