St Sebastian Christian Art | Male Figure Gold Drawing
St Sebastian Christian Art | Male Figure Gold Drawing
This is a mid-size mixed technique drawing on black paper with application of gilding (composition gold leaf, aka Dutch metal).
Depicted is a Christian saint and and a gay iconic figure Saint Sebastian. The halo is drawn based on ornaments of Florentine Renaissance tradition. On the left-hand side of the drawing, four letters (half cut) are the abbreviation of the phrase attributed to the saint – "We Shall Not Grudge |...|".
Sebastian was an early Christian and martyr. He is is usually depicted tied to a tree and shot with arrows (although arrows did not kill him initially). Sebastian is a very popular nude male saint, especially among gay men but also athletes.
The martyr is usually depicted nude, muscular, young, attractive which is why he became a symbol of male beauty for gay community.
